September Birchbox Review

Hello all. 🙂

I am not the best with makeup. For me, simple is how I like to go. If I’m feeling super fancy – maybe a lopsided liquid cat-eye. But even that is pushing it. I used to get most all of my makeup/hair/beauty products from Target, etc. But, now I am super fancy and I would like to share all of my fanciness with you.

So, I have had my Birchbox subscription for probably about two-ish years now.

For those of you who don’t know what Birchbox is – it is a monthly subscription for a small box of five beauty samples (sometimes full-size though!) sent directly to your door for only $10 a month. Now, these products are not just regular drugstore products – they are high end beauty samples that – most of the time – cost around $10-12 alone at regular beauty stores like Ulta/Sephora. So, $10 for five high end products that you probably would not have paid to try otherwise is a pretty good deal, in my opinion. I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to just fork over $10-12 bucks to try out one random product. I would probably just pass on by. With this subscription, you get to try out products that you most likely otherwise would have passed by – and are able to discover new products that you never would have thought you liked in the first place! (Kind of puts you out of your comfort zone – which can be good!)

Sure, not everything you are sent is going to be something that you love and have to have. I’ve had entire boxes where I wasn’t a huge fan of anything in the box. But then the next month, I would love all five samples. I mean really though, it’s only $10 bucks. And the entire point of these boxes is – like I said – for you to be able to try new products that you otherwise wouldn’t have even known about.

When you sign up, you fill out a personal beauty profile. It will ask you your personal style, how you do your hair/makeup/skin regime, etc. You also input things like hair & skin type/tone so that you receive the correct customized products in your particular box.

These samples are all kinds of different products – from makeup to hair products, perfume, skin cleansers, lotions, hair accessories, makeup tools… I’ve even gotten some gourmet snack samples in my boxes. (Milk chocolate potato chip bar! Fancy granola bars! *Whale Emoji Here*) So, it isn’t simply just cheap eye shadows & lip glosses. (LOOKING AT YOU, IPSY.)

If you like any of the products you receive in your box – you can easily purchase the item from the Birchbox shop later on. They offer free shipping on items from your box and you almost always can find a coupon code to use towards your purchase as well! Another thing that I REALLY love about Birchbox – the points! For every 100 points you earn, that gives you $10 to spend in the Birchbox shop! Every purchase will earn you 1 point for every dollar you spend. AND AND AND – After you get your box and try out your samples, make sure that you go online to your account and write reviews for the products before your next month’s box ships out. Why? Because you will earn 10 points for each review! That is 50 points free, just for doing all your reviews! Do reviews for two boxes and boom – $10 free dollars for you to spend. (But you only have until your next month’s box ships to fill out your reviews – after that you won’t earn any points! So keep on it!)

Yes, I am aware that it is now October, but I will be reviewing my September Birchbox today. Simply because I needed time to sample all the products sufficiently, yes? Of course.

Hello September.

100% Pure Organic Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream:

LOVE. As a mom, I am always on the lookout for a good under eye cream to diminish those under eye circles. Always. I am always tired. So I’ve received other eye creams before that all claim to do the same thing – “Miracle for under eye circles! Makes them disappear!”. And big fat NOPE. This product actually lives up to its claims! I put it on in the morning after I wash my face – and it honestly wakes me right up. The caffeine aspect of this product is clutch, you guys. Maybe it’s all in my head – but I honestly feel like a surge of energy after I put it on. It makes me feel really awake and like how Beyonce feels in the morning I would imagine.

GLASTONBURY, ENGLAND - JUNE 26: Beyonce headlines the Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 26, 2011 in Glastonbury, England. The festival, which started in 1970 when several hundred hippies paid 1 GBP to attend, has grown into Europe's largest music festival attracting more than 175,000 people over five days. (Actual picture of me in the morning. No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. That’s me.)

The skin under my eyes look moisturized and refreshed & my dark circles seem to be fading with daily use. I am excited to continue to use it & will probably purchase the full size product if I continue to like it as much as I do now. Bonus – it legit smells like coffee, too!

Acure Organics Facial Cleansing Gel Superfruit + CGF:

I am a nazi about washing my face. It’s seriously SO important! Its your skin! Your largest organ! Take care of it! Anyways, I digress. I actually just washed my face with this about 15 minutes ago. It seemed to cleanse my face nicely – but I will say that my skin felt VERY tight afterwards. This doesn’t seem to be a very moisturizing cleanser. You will definitely need a nice moisturizer afterwards. (Which you should be using anyway! Moisturizer police!) One strange thing – the smell. It smells citrusy; like oranges/grapefruits, etc. BUT it also kind of smelled like Pine sol to me? Soooo that was a turn off. Bathroom/floor cleaner smell on my face? Nope.

Harvey Prince Eau So Divine:

This stuff smells AWESOME. It is a musky scent; with hints of fruit and vanilla. I loved it. And honestly? It smells a LOT like the way more expensive Vikor & Rolf Flowerbomb perfume. I have flowerbomb & it is my favorite fragrance other than SJP’s ‘Lovely’ (obvi). This Harvey Prince scent seriously rivals it – it’s just a bit more fruity smelling. So, if you want a cheap alternative to Flowerbomb – this would be it! One gripe with Harvey Prince fragrances in general though: the scent just doesn’t last! I received & loved another fragrance from this company over the summer and subsequently purchased it. I would spray it on and within 15 minutes the scent was gone. Seriously. So, that is the only thing that stops me from purchasing further scents from this company. Don’t want to risk it!

amika_bombshellblowoutspray_900x900

amika Bombshell Blowout Spray:

My hair is extremely fine and thin. I have a feeling in about 20 years I may look a bit like this:

britney_spears_head_shaved

(Sorry Joe.)

give-leo-an-oscar

So any product that will bump up the volume factor in my life is mucho welcomed, gracias. Here’s the thing – at first this product seemed to do just that. It does uplift and definitely works as a dry shampoo. It just didn’t maintain that volume for me. So I don’t know if that was purely just my hair or if I am using it wrong (COMPLETELY could be the reason. I am quite inept at blowing out my hair). I will continue to use the sample and see if I can make it work for me though. It does have a sticky texture to it though, just to mention! Also something weird about it – amika products usually smell AMAZING. This one doesn’t smell like much of anything honestly. Not a deal breaker but I may have been more sold on it if it smelled like vanilla & flowers. 😉

popbeauty_popportfolioeyeshadowpalette_900x900

POP Beauty POP Portfolio Eyeshadow Palette:

I’m going to be honest here. I am not a fan of eyeshadow. Don’t really know how to blend it. It always just kind of muddles together & I end up looking like this:

bad_blue

(Never a good look.)

I used to wear shimmery golds/bronzes because I read somewhere that those colors work well with blue eyes (Yes hello I have blue eyes, lucky me!), but I just got out of the habit and now I rarely use eyeshadow.

So when I receive eyeshadows in my boxes I usually just throw them straight in the trash. ESPECIALLY if they are multi-colored. NOPE. I received the silver/purple plum trio of this brand in my box. I have not tried it. The palette itself seems to have fantastic reviews, so that can speak for itself. Maybe if I learn how to apply eyeshadow like a big girl I can eventually give this a shot, who knows.   (SOMEONE HELP ME)

So there you have it! I’ve found some really awesome products over the years from my boxes that I use regularly. I love receiving my birchbox every month – it’s fun to open it up and see what products I get to try out!

[Here is a link for $5 off your first box if you’re interested in trying out Birchbox!]
